How to use the Complete Guide to Concrete & Asphalt Calculation

Calculating the volume of material needed for a project is critical to avoiding shortages or expensive waste. Whether you are pouring a concrete slab, laying an asphalt driveway, or spreading mulch, the core math relies on calculating Cubic Yards.

The Cubic Yard Rule

Most bulk construction materials are sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet (3ft x 3ft x 3ft).

Depth Matters

For driveways or patios, standard depth is 4 inches. For heavy loads (RV pads, garages), 6 inches is recommended.

The Formula

Volume (cu yd) = L × W × D / 27

Material Densities

  • Concrete: ~4000 lbs per cubic yard (150 lbs/ft³). Usually ordered by the yard from a truck or 80lb bags (45 bags per yard).
  • Asphalt: ~3900 lbs per cubic yard. Compacts significantly.
  • Mulch: Covers ~160 sq ft at 2 inches deep per cubic yard.

Common Questions

How many 80lb bags are in a cubic yard?

Approximately 45 bags of 80lb concrete mix make one cubic yard. Always buy a few extra for spillage or uneven grades.

Concrete vs. Asphalt for driveways?

Concrete is more durable (30+ years) but stains easily and cracks in freeze/thaw. Asphalt is cheaper and flexible but needs resealing every few years.

How long until I can drive on concrete?

Walk on it after 24-48 hours. Drive on it after 7 days (when it reaches ~70% strength). Full cure takes 28 days.
